Reading 1
The year begins on the 1st of January and ends on the 31st of December. If you want to see which day of the week or which day of the month it is, you look at a calendar.
We work six days a week, one day each week, on Sunday, we do not work because it is a day of rest. During the year, besides Sunday, we have other days of rest which are called holidays. Good Friday, Easter Monday, the Spring Bank Holiday which comes on a Monday. The last Monday in August, Christmas Day and Boxing Day are Bank Holidays in England. New Year's Day is not a holiday in England but it is one in Scotland.
One of the most important of these holidays is Christmas. It is an English custom to send Christmas Greeting Cards.
We all like the holidays, ee take every year in summer during July or August, because we can go to the country or the sea-side and have a rest away from our usual work. Some people cannot have their yearly holidays in summer and are obilged to take them in winter, do they go to be mountains for winter sports.
During Easter, which is in spring, the schools and the most of the business houses are closed from Good Friday till (until) Tuesday. It makes a long weekend for us to go into the country away from cities.
