Phrasal Verbs

 


Phrasal verb is the combination of verb and one or two particles (preposition or adverb) and gas a new meaning. 

Verb + preposition: go out, look at

Verb + adverb: go away, go together

1. Ask out: mengajak kencan. 

Tukijo asked Tukiyem out last night. 

2. Back up: mendukung

I will always back you up. 

3. Break down: mogok, rusak

My car broke down on the way home. 

My washing machine broke down. 

4. Break in: membuka paksa

Everyone was sleeping when the robbers broke in. 

5. Bresl off: memutuskan (hubungan, tunangan) 

They've broken off their engagement. 

6. Break out: menyebar

The new virus breaks out all over the world. 

7. Break up: mengakhiri hubungan

Varel broke up with his girlfriend last month. 

8. Bring along: mengajak

I will bring my boyfriend along to the party. 

9. Bring up: membesarkan

She brought up five children. 

He was brought up by his uncle. 

10. Call at: singgah, mampir

The train calls at Solo Balapan station. 

11. Call back: telpon balik

I will call you back as soon as possible. 

12. Call off: membatalkan

The manager decided to call off the meeting. 

13. Call for: menjemput

I will call for you just after midday. 

14. Call in: memanggil ke rumah

We had to call in the electrician as all lights went out. 

15. Call on: mengunjungi

I should call on my grandmother more often. 

16. Call up: menelpon

Call up medical! 

17. Calm down: menenangkan hati

Please call down, everything will be alright. 

18. Care for: sayang, senang

Aldy really cared for her mother. 

19. Carry on: lanjut aja

Carry on. I didn't mean to interupt you. 

20. Carry out: mengerjakan

It's difficult yo carry the plan out. 

21. Catch up: mengejar, menyusul

We have to catch up on them. 

Don't worry, Rama will catch up. 

22. Check in: datang ke hotel dan melakukan pendaftaran

We need to check in around 2 PM. 

23.Check out: meninggalkan hotel

We will check out the hotel on Sunday. 

24. Check up: memeriksa

I need to check up on few things before I go. 

25. Cheer up: menghibur

Michelle was sad, so Hana cheered her up. 

26. Chill out: santai

I just want  to chill out tonight. 

27. Close down: tutup

Their intention is to close down the factory. Hotels are closing down all over the country. Close down all programs that are running begore you install the software. 

28. Come along: ikut

I want to go Mall. Do you want to come along? 

29. Come back: kembali

I'll come back and pick you up. We've just come back from New York. I'll come back later. 

30. Come down: turun

He was sitting in a tree and refused to come down. In the afternoon, the train really started to come down. 

31. Come from: berasal dari

I come from Jakarta. 

32. Come in: masuk

Come in. I have something to show you. Please come in and have a cup of coffee. 

33. Cool down: manjadi terang

I think you should wait until she's cooled down a little. 

34. Cut down: menebang

Some trees had been cut down. 

35. Cut off: memutuskan (berkomunikasi, listrik)

36. Dig up: nengungkit-ungkit

41. Drop off: mengantar

43. Eat in: makan di rumah

44. Eat out: makan di luar

We've got no food in the house. Shall we just est out tonight? 

They often eat out at nice restsurants. 

We like to eat out in Saturday nights. 

45. Eat up: makan sampai habis

Eat up! We have to go out soon. 

46. Figure out: mencari tahu

I want to go to New York next month but I need to figure out how much it'll cost. 

I'm trying to figure out a way to make brownies. 

47. Fill in: mengisi data

Uou have to fill in this registration form. 

48. Fill up: mengisi cairan

Let's fill up with petrol before we leave. 

49. Find out: mengetahui sesuatu

My father finds out that my sister has a boyfriend. 

50. Get along: membuat seseorang mengerti

He talked more loudly and clearly to get along his point accross.
