Active Vs. Passive form

 


Active verbs are words used to describe an action that a subject is performing. Using active voice males our wruting more dtnamic and interesting. 

Passive voice is when you make the object of an action inti the subject of a sentence. It id characterized by passive verb (be + verb 3). Passive verbs highlight an object that receives the action in the sentence. Because passive voice is generally weak, try to avoid it. 

A sentence is written in passive voice when tge subject of the sentence has an action done by someone or something else. Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important or not known, however, who or what is performing the action. The passive forms of a verb are created by combining a form if the "to be verb" with the past participle of the main verb. 

Active: Tita visits Kuta Beach. 

Passive: Kuta Beach is visited by Tita. 

The sentence is in Simple Present, how about in : Simple Past, Present Perfect, Simple Future, Present Progressive, Past Progressive, Past Perfect. 

Active: Mary helps her son. 

Passive: The son is helped by Mary. 

Active: People see peace in family as essential for spiritual growth. 

Passive: Peace in family is seen as essential for spiritual growth. 

Active: Muslims perform prayers at least five times a day. 

Passive: Prayers are performed by Muslims at least five times a day. 

Exercise:

Decide whether the verbs are active or passive!

1. You ate a piece of chocolate cake. 

2. The librarian read the book to the students. 

3. The money was stolen. 

4. They are paid on Fridays. 

5. The movie is being made in Hollywood. 

6. I washed my car three weeks ago. 

7. His hair was cut by a professional. 

8. I will introduce you to my boss this week. 

9. It would have been fixed on the weekend. 

10. The national anthem is being sung by Hasto this time. 

Rewrite the sentences into passive voice! 

1. The accountant calculates the loss. 

2. The director of the company writes a memo for the manager. 

3. The students must translate the text. 

4. My mother should cook breakfast for my little sister. 

5. The plumber fixes the sink. 

6. Riwanto asked Gatot a question. 

7. Somebody built the house last year. 

8. He gives him a bell. 

9. Ronald will look after him. 

10. They don't speak French in this shop.
