 Biograhy vs. Autobiography

Hello, everybody.

It is nice to meet you again with me, Mr. Nowo Setyawan from SMAN 5 Tuban - East Java.

I try to write a resume what we are learning tonight. We have an interesting topic about writing biography with the speaker is Mrs. Lely who comes from Barjanegara - Central Java and moderator Mr. Muliadi, M.Pd. who comes from Tolitoli, Central Sulawesi.Hopefully it will be understood by beloved readers.. Lely is a teacher at SDN 1 Gumelem Kulon, Susukan Banjarnegara. She has also graduated from the 5th of Inspring teacher. Then she opens her meeting friendly by saying  “Jelek-jelek mau berkarya daripada yang tidak mau”. Although is not quite good but we have tried. It make me embarrassed because I always join every meeting but I am lazy to write its summary.

By the way, what is a biography? Who know? A biography is to talk about whole stories of someone from life or death person. It consists of point of view, childhood, education background, work, work experience and achievement of life. Biography can written in article, book, documentary film through a research or interview the biographer and from the surroundings.

What are the purposes?

a. Giving inspiring and motivation

It can give motivation and inspiring to someone based on work experience and success that the person has achieved. 

b. Becoming History

It is used as a source for young generation. By writing a biography, we have known someone who has contributed or influenced in the past.

c. Having wide horizon

It can give us wide horizon from the biographer.

d. Having heritage
It is used as heritage and known by young generation so that it is remembered.

The steps of writing biography:
1. Having a research to the person. Collect information about background, last life, education, career, achievement, work experience from letters, article, books, interview and internet.
 
2. Write outline. It makes easy to write biography later. 

3. Write interesting introduction. The opening gives short description about the person.

4. Give attention to readers. Write the way of life.

5. Sequenced of events. Start from childhood, teenager, adult, and so on.

6. Using a proper language that understood constantly.

7. Give a clear description related to struggle, effort, challenges, difficulties, failure, success, and happiness.

8. Don't forget using wise words to express good characters.

9. Revise the biography regularly. Make sure the fact and grammar correctly. 

10. Make conclusion and influence good deed for society or the world.

Later, how about autobiography? What are differences between biography and autobiography?
Autobiography is notes about the writer related to life, experience, important events that influence the writer's life. Autobiography uses the first singular person (the writer's life  that was begun in the past until now. It can tell about education, family, marriage, occupation, experience, and so on. So, it can give wide horizon, understand the writer's life and experience as a history.

The general objection of autobiography is to share the writer's life and experience to readers. And the specific purposes are as follows:
1. Understanding.
The writer understands about himself or herself better. It can reflect meaningful events and connected with life experience.
2. Memorizing
It can memorize the writer and family past experience,   
3. Inspiring.
It can inspire the readers if they have same situation and life challenge.
4. Giving information
It can give information about history, culture, social life where the writer is exist in order to be understood by readers.
5. Good figure.
It cause good figure for society in personal or public.

There are some steps in writing Autobiography:
a. Preparation by having a research.
Make draft about important events, interested place and people. It can be started from past experience, family, society, culture in that time,

b. Determine style and focus.

Determine narrative or reflective style and focus on career, family, or journey., 

c. Make outline.

Making outline by choosing the most important event whether sequenced or not.

d. Write first draft.

Start writing the first draft based on the outline and ignore the mistakes.

e, Revise.

Revise the mistakes and add detailed information and new experience.

f. Give the title share it.

After the final revision, we give the proper title and share to the others. We may publish online and print it.

g. Need time.

Writing autobiography needs time and involve our feeling in order to be better.

Mrs. Lely says that it is not a profit oriented but we can practice writing autobiography or biography. Good luck.
